        Dr. Naixin Kang received M.S. and Ph.D. from Soochow university. Her postdoctoral subject is the discovery of natural product activity under the supervision of Prof. Shilin Yang at Soochow university. Her research is aimed at 1) exploring the biological activity of anemoside B4, the major constituent of Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) Regel; and 2) exploring the anti-inflammatory and anti-viral mechanism of anemoside B4.


        As a gift from nature, many natural products exhibit unique physicochemical properties and excellent pharmacological activities attracting extensive attention for drug development. Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) which is most frequently associated with Enterovirus 71 (EV71), can progress to severe complications. The treatment of severe HFMD is challenging due to the lack of effective antiviral drugs. Anemoside B4 exhibited stronger antiviral activities in EV71-infected cells and suckling mice than the established broad-spectrum antiviral drug Ribavirin. Stable-isotope labelling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) combined with bioinformatics analysis demonstrated that anemoside B4 could significantly affect Hippo pathway. In-depth research showed that anemoside B4 prevented the interaction between YWHA/14-3-3 and Yap through upregulating the expression of YWHA/14-3-3, thereby activating the RLRs signaling pathway. These results suggested that anemoside B4 would be a potential lead compound for developing anti-EV71 drug.
